The 2024 Tudor Dragon 1oz platinum coin is the fifth bullion release in the Royal Tudor Beasts Collection from The Royal Mint, which features 10 'Beasts', consisting of statues that line the Moat Bridge at Hampton Court.
Designed by David Lawrence, the reverse side of the coin features the Tudor Dragon adopted by Henry Tudor (later King Henry VII) when raising an army against Richard II in preparation for the Battle of Bosworth field. This design is not only for visual appeal but also has enhanced security features as a protection against counterfeiting. The obverse side of the coin presents the official coinage portrait of His Majesty King Charles III by Martin Jennings.
The dragon was used as a heraldic symbol, representing power, strength, and authority. It’s origins can be traced back to Welsh mythology, where dragons were often depicted as powerful and fearsome creatures. The Tudors, who had Welsh ancestry, adopted the dragon as a symbol to emphasize their connection to Wales and to convey their authority as rulers.
The 2024 Tudor Dragon platinum coin contains exactly 1 troy ounce (31.1 grams) of pure 999.5 platinum. The coin will be in production for a few months until the next coin in the series is released, so collectors should purchase as soon as possible if they wish to get all coins in the series.
